The Karate Shop has been kitting out martial artists in Centurion and across South Africa since 2012.
We are not a general sports retailer with a martial arts shelf. Everything we stock is martial arts equipment, and we stock it because we know what it has to survive — a gi that gets washed twice a week, a mitt that takes a thousand impacts a month, a belt that has to still look right at grading three years from now.
Why that matters
Anyone can list a uniform online. Fewer people can tell you that the 12 oz kata gi you are eyeing will be miserable in a February class in Gauteng, or that the 8 oz will do everything you need for your first two years, or that the belt you have picked is one size too short to tie properly.
That is the part we are actually for.
We answer the question before you order. Send us your height, your weight, and what you train, and you will get an answer from someone who has fitted this equipment on real students — not a link back to the size chart.
We stock what lasts. We would rather sell you one gi that survives three years than three that do not. Our suppliers are chosen on that basis, and we drop products that come back.
We know the federations. Approval requirements change and differ between associations. If you tell us what you are competing in, we will tell you whether the equipment qualifies — and say so plainly if we are not certain rather than guess with your entry fee.
Who we serve
Karate is our home ground, and it is the bulk of what we stock. We also supply students and clubs training judo, taekwondo, kickboxing, boxing and mixed martial arts — uniforms, protective equipment, training equipment, and the club-quantity orders that come with running a dojo.
We work with individual students, with parents kitting out a child who has just started, and with clubs and instructors ordering for a squad or a grading.
Instructors and clubs: talk to us directly about bulk orders and club requirements. It is a different conversation to a single order and it should be.
How we work
We are a small business, and we run it like one. Orders are packed by the people who sold them to you. When you phone, you speak to someone who knows your order. When something goes wrong, you are not filing a ticket.
We are in Hennopspark, Centurion, and we deliver nationwide by courier. Collection can be arranged if you are local.
That scale is deliberate. It is why we can spend ten minutes on the phone getting a size right, and it is also why we ask for patience during a grading rush when half of Gauteng needs a new belt in the same fortnight.
What we believe about equipment
Equipment does not make the martial artist. It should not get in the way of becoming one.
A gi that fits properly, a belt that ties correctly, protective gear that stays where it is put — these things disappear during training, which is exactly what they should do. Equipment that is too big, worn out, or wrong for the discipline is a distraction at best, and at worst it is the reason someone gets hurt.
So: buy protective equipment to fit now, not to grow into. Replace gear when the padding has gone, not when it looks bad. And if you are unsure, ask — that is free, and it is faster than a return.
